UnCovered Interview – the making of the cover of the Frank Zappa album Over-Nite Sensation,

I attribute my brother Bob for introducing me to Frank Zappa. While I was immersed in my Black Sabbath albums Santana and Mahavishnu Orchestra, Bob was pleased to memorize every word of his George Carlin and Frank Zappa records, and since we had to share the stereo (on top of piano my mother), I heard (and learned), while Bob would play Over-Nite Sensation almost indefinitely.

I’ve always been attracted to groups whose lyrics included doses of comedy and sign-wink wink-sign implied (beginning with the Kinks and, later, the Sex Pistols), but this was the first Zappa album where I just could not believe I heard what I heard (and at the same time, praying that my mother was not listening as well). He was wrong about television programmers, producers in Montana and sex, but these parodies have been placed on top of really impressive musical beds – Mothers group increased by virtuosos including George Duke on keyboards and Jon-Luc Ponty on violin – and if the total package resonates with me in a way different from anything I had heard before.

The record proved to be much more popular in mainstream AOR audience (the 16 records he had released since his debut in 1966 entitled “Freak Out!) And, therefore, became the first LP to sell gold FZ. Of course, this self-appointed protectors confuse popularity of pure-Ness Zappa (which marks the record as being too commercial – I mean, it would be done: “I am the slime” on SNL, for the love of God ! – Click here to see), while others who had always appreciated his clever word play of thought he had abandoned the intelligentsia happily hanging around in the mud, he sang about. Whatever. J ‘I just thought it was fun (just tell you exactly what he was thinking / fantasizing about) is, after all, most of the reasons we join gangs in the first place.

Another thing about Zappa was clearly illustrated by the work he has commissioned for this recording – he appreciated the opportunity to use the registration packages to give even more fans to talk with his music and words. I touched his wallet wallet a few years back during my interview with Jerry Schatzberg on the hilarious Sgt. Peppers parody he helped produce for We’re Only In It For The Money, and have long been a fan of Cal Schenkel’s body of work, but, like the composer’s music will continue to turn new and exciting, it would pouch.

To continue this tradition of excellence album art, they (Zappa and Schenkel) turn to the illustrator who helped them the promo artwork for the album 200 Motels soundtrack artist Dave McMacken. Dave has recently updated its account after a bit untidy break with his former comrades in the studio, so this opportunity could not have come at a better time, and Dave was for something new and exciting career. As expected, the work – and the resulting image – prompted the cover art – and illustrator – to new extremes, so if you want to know the history behind the “making of” Over- Nite Sensation, “n ‘t Touch that dial!”

In the words of the artist, Dave McMacken (interviewed late March / early April 2010) –
After graduating from Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles in 1967, I joined with Craig Butler, Art Snyder and Patti Mitsui to form a design studio called “The Institute for Better Vision.” We specializing in rock music and film projects and has made a number of projects together, including Sweetheart of the Rodeo Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde for The Byrds, Pickin ‘Up The Pieces for Poco and, finally, all promo graphics – including the album sleeve, billboards, movie poster and everything – from Frank Zappa. At that time, became Bizarre Records Records Discreet and Cal Schenkel has been artist-in house by Frank . Frank and Cal put the veil on 200 Motels and were looking for an artist to help them, then we heard about this and have met Murakami Wolf Swenson Films in Hollywood – just off Sunset Boulevard – and Cal showed my work.

They decided to judge me and asked me to make a model of part of the coverage that would function in Frank look like a pulp-style, facing the population and “Bingo”, 200 Motels (Editor’s Note – This model will later be modified to be used as a cover of Zappa Rhino EP titled Rare meat, see picture below). Cal is a very quiet, a great artist Frank, and I was honored to work with him, FZ and Murakami Wolf Swenson Films. Cal and I came across them all the time while he was doing animations and environments that I did. Zappa has always amazed me – he was very disciplined, strict and could be brutal – but his talent has dropped my jaw. Once he and Gail invited me to dinner and he took me to his basement studio and showed me his system and all quad-phonic guitars, drums and pianos. Gail kind of scared the shit out of me and I had to bail to go feed my dogs. 200 Motels turned out to be my last job with the “Institute”, because just after the film project has been done, we dissolved the company then and there during an argument and throwing furniture we call each other all sorts of cool names.

Fast forward a few years and Frank calls and asks if I want to paint another blanket for him. I almost fell off my chair. He wanted to start immediately and that night I heard a really strange decision from the scene Zappa imagined. In great detail, he began to tell me the story of Over-Nite Sensation and the paint has been covered to make a formal, realistic “Dutch Master” style, with objects in the painting to be portrayed as visual elements of the story.

The painting represents a moment in the life of a roadie touring group, with “Over-Nite Sensation” is a reference to the voyeurism of bands on the road. The space we look at is a real prospect, but they are in a mirror and the object on the side of the viewer are in reverse. Our object is a focal grapefruit, the symbol of a sexual object, and the grapefruit has been penetrated, with “cum” oozes out of him. The fire extinguisher symbolizes the completion of the sexual act, and even the frame is a sexual fantasy, beginning in gold and going to decay. All other elements – the Holiday Inn, food, maps and oozing TV – represent the doldrums of being on the road.

I took notes clamped during this session – I did not have a written or description – and worked on this painting for two months, meeting with Frank on several occasions to discuss progress. I started with a pencil and he has evolved as we proceeded, with Frank adding that “more is better” – it is really cool when the musical act is also artistic director and owns the production company! In the process, we had a meeting with Chris Whorf Warner Brothers has included the record at some stage during development and showed him the pencil drawing I had done. He loved it and picked it up and was leaving with her for use as the final art. In rear-view, it was not such a bad idea, but there was no way I would miss the fun I had, so I went and retrieved the sketch Illustrationland continuing my work . I made the final table using casein paints, which are a fresh mix of oils and acrylics and has the beautiful aroma of vanilla. They then abandoned these paintings and I paint in acrylics news exclusively – they are much less difficult.

Ultimately, I had time I needed, and have contributed to this work became one of my favorite experiences ever. Because we all knew each other, this post-200 Motels life was easy. Cal and I became good friends with two of us who live near by Los Angeles. I liked the rock scene and even though Frank was all business all the time – in art and music – I present the workshop of Frank in Glendale and offer him a beer – which he never accepted – and I go to work, hang out listening to The Mothers repeat. Frank George Duke showed how to fix the music, then jump on the drum kit Aynsley Dunbar do the same – and strongly encouraging them to produce what he wanted – for fun really, but sometimes it was a bit much for me. My black lab “Shakespeare” was a relief for my shyness because she loved all the attention, but sometimes I just wanted to finish my work and go home …

When I was done with the project and my customers were happy, I looked back on the time I spent with everyone associated with Frank Zappa and realized that the experience had a huge effect on my work in the future. Indeed, it has lasted all my life – I worked for Frank Zappa – there is no need to say something more.

Schoenberg – The 12 Tone Music Inventer

Arnold Schoenberg, a pioneer of 20th century music, was born in Vienna, Austria, September 13, 1874. As a boy he learned to play the violin and cello. When he was 18, he left school and worked as a bank clerk, studying music in his spare time. Deciding to make music his career, he began to compose. He admired the operas of Richard Wagner and I wanted to write music like that.

Schoenberg married Mathilde von Zemlinsky in 1901. The previous year he had started working on songs Gurr, a large composition for four choirs, soloists and orchestra enormous. This work, based on Danish medieval history, was completed in 1911. At this time Schoenberg had wanted to write another kind of music. He began to compose new works strange, where the notes seem to walk anywhere, sometimes called atonal music, are often very brief. Schoenberg Six Little Piano Pieces (1911) only lasts about 5 minutes.

Before long, Schoenberg felt he needed to develop rules for writing a new kind of music. He developed the method “12-tone” of the composition. In this method, each melody and harmony in a room is from a particular arrangement of 12 different notes. Schoenberg and his disciples wrote several books using this technique.

In 1923 Schoenberg’s wife died. The following year he married Gertrud Kolisch. In 1925 he was appointed professor of composition at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin.

Schoenberg left Germany in 1933 and moved to the United States. He first lived in Boston. Then, from 1936 to 1944 he taught composition at the University of California at Los Angeles. There he wrote many important compositions and had a great influence as a teacher. Among the works of Schoenberg are four string quartets, a piano concerto, a violin concerto, music for the stage, and numerous works for piano and orchestra. He had planned to finish his great opera Moses and Aaron, who had been left unfinished in 1932, but he did not live to compose the last act. Schoenberg died in Los Angeles July 13, 1951.

How I Learned To Play The Guitar

Ever wanted to learn how to play guitar, but do not know where to start? Let me first share with you how I did it. I then in grade 2 when my interest in guitar started playing. It started from mere curiosity, to see my uncle and dad a few songs that sound as good for me to play. I am an observant child and did not find any problems remember what to do when tuning the guitar on every string. So this is what I have learned firsthand. How “relative tune” on the guitar. But the guitar to vote correctly, needs a voice fork, pitch pipe, a digital receiver or other reference such as a keyboard or piano. The next step I did was to learn the chords of “Songhits” music magazines as well in the Philippines and “Jingle”, another popular music magazine. I tried to find popular songs that played on the radio in the music videos and magazines try to play the chords and then try to sing along to get a good understanding of the chord patterns.

?

Way back in 1977, the songs of the Beatles and the Bee Gees are the most popular in those days and is easy to play and sing together. Earl’s cur pop / jazz guitar music is also very popular those days and I was a bit steep for his play and has tried a few songs like “Like a lover” to deciper, “Waiting for Cathy,” ” You should know “and” Doc “. I was interested in the country music of “Folk Songs” as is commonly called that includes songs by Don McLean (I played the song “Vincent” as close as possible to the original), Simon and Garfunkel (The Boxer) Kansas (One of my favorite is “Dust in the Wind”), Jim Croce (Photographs and memories) and America. The Eagles and Neil Young were also very popular those days I studied the “Hotel California” and “Four strong winds” only myself to please and of course, my friends (laughs). During my school days, I noticed that a good guitar player to the one above the rest. It contributes to a man’s charisma and appeal to both sexes, boys and girls, have been prepared against someone who plays well. And until this moment, this fact still applies.

?

In short, I learned how to play guitar all by myself. I had no mentor. This is just the extreme passion and interest to learn that motivated me a good guitar player. During my study days, me and my friends used to jam in the ME lab during vacant time and asked to stop numbers to perform at conferences and extracurricular activities. We eventually formed a band which later disbanded due to busy schedules, personal and class.

?

After graduation and after a few years of work, when I was a show were recruited to participate band is formed by the same old university buddy as a major guitarist (the band has on the local and international gigs as far afield as Bahrain and Dubai, UAE during a span of 3 years). My auidition piece “It does not matter” by the group Spyro Gyra. The piece is a pop / jazz fusion guitar dominated piece and a bit too complicated to be learned by a beginner electric guitar player, but after a week of decipering notes by the audience, I managed to play it well close to the original. Van Halen’s “Jump” guitar solo is too complicated to learn just by “listening” method. I manage a copy of the magazine to get a couple of times to learn the notes and finger positions as well as finger taps and pull-offs. And the list goes on and on. From Guns n ‘Roses to Metallica, Van Halen and Joe Satriani, Joan Jett to Tina Turner, Meat Loaf to Brian Adams, America Carpenters, explicit to Mr. Big, to Basia Astrud Gilberto, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana & Antonio Jobim, has I learned and enjoyed playing some of their music pieces. By the way, my latest passion is the “Bossa Nova Guitar” chords and rhythm patterns better. I also love improvising and the change of a particular song’s genre at any time. For example, during the playing of Toto’s “Africa” in the bossa nova mode, I can easily remove and change the tempo of the country, reggae and bossa back to add to the fun.

?

Well, enough said and done. You better start learning and playing the guitar by yourself to prove that I am right. You need to exercise at least 3 hours a day, fluency and skill to get you or a guardian to rent some discipline to impose if you can not do it all by yourself. Play the guitar is fun and it makes you “look better” than the average old girl or that do not play it well. Plus, it’s a good exrecise for the brain and to a man’s hand / finger motor ability and coordination. Here is a link to my guitar music YouTube videos for your enjoyment:

Jack Johnson Tickets- At the Top of Success

Singer and musician Jack Johnson throne still in the top of the charts in North America thanks to his album Sleep Through the Static, released last February 2. The album topped the Billboard 200 for a third consecutive week with sales of 105 000 copies recorded during the last week.

Jack Johnson was born in Hawaii. At age 17 became the youngest surfer to move up the end of the pipe. The following year he joined the University of California at Santa Barbara, where he earned a degree in film. Participated in the film All For One and The Show. Jack returned to Hawaii to film thicker than water.

Giving up his career was devoted to music, and Brushfire Fairytales was released in September 2002. A year later, he signed On and On. Followed by In Between Dreams in 2005 and Curious George in 2006. Later we found on the soundtrack of the film A Brokedown Melody. In 2008, he is back with a new album called Sleep Through The Static.

It’s been a while since Bob Marley’s eldest son had not spoken to Jack Johnson. Almost three years after the release of the album Love Is My Religion, which earned him get the Grammy for best reggae album in 2007, the Jamaican musician released on 22 June following his third solo album.

It was not the seriousness of this expectation, since this new song, titled “Family Time”, provided its share of surprises and good collaborations. Of the 11 tracks present, we can indeed find Ziggy Marley duets with Jack Johnson, Paul Simon, Toots, Willie Nelson and Rita Marley and Jamie Lee Curtis.

We probably could not have expected anything different from a musician who embodies the concept better than any other is great: in this case, a cool night. Jack Johnson Signed, of course.

It is thus expected, and was thus the last month. For his performance in Montreal, Johnson was neither surprising nor disappointing. Quite effective in the genre, with rhythms that tickle the feet and a string of successes easily absorbed into the soft night breeze.

Today I want to know about my gift: piano.
I started learning how to so wonderful instrument to play when I was actually already 13 years old. It all started a few years earlier when I was young, I always remained fascinated my father saw me play piano. Father was brought up by some Catholic seminary education system, where he taught a keyboard instrument called the harmonium playing.
I stay myself literally shocked to hear a student practicing his piano technique close to a music school when I was 12 years old. Fortunately for me my parents were able to give me the best of all teachers Samuele Specchi that me such a wonderful wonderful word lead.

I studied some classical music and I have my technique, but then I started paying my own music and I realized that when I sit before a keyboard or digital piano, heavenly music flows all my fingers.-It is a heaven sent gift. Thanks God for that.
Why do I like playing piano so much?
Just remember this. I have lived for nearly 5 years in the U.S. I have for you a few years in Oakland, California, and the rest that I lived in Sacramento, the capital of a beautiful California.
When I moved to Sacramento, the University, I use so many nights in my books to spend my engineering books, but rather on the piano playing. I would you in this beautiful building, which was the music department, walked up to the third floor and sneak in an empty room with a keyboard.
To within was like in heaven. Music will always be a wonderful constant in my life.
my very own digital piano music video for your pleasure all of which allowed me to learn how to play thanks.
For your enjoyment.

Leo Fender’s Guitar Amps

He did not really intend to make guitars in the beginning. He did a good job and had studied accounting and bookeeping for an ice company, the highway police and a tire manufacturer.

tinkered But all through school, young Leo Fender had with electronics, because when he was thirteen, his uncle sent him a box of discarded radio parts, and a battery. And when he visited his uncle and heard the loud sound from a home-built radio, he was hooked.

Good Luck! Leo Fender lost his job! If the tire off company set all accountants, Leo and his new wife borrowed $ 600, moved back to his hometown of Fullerton, California, and began the Fender Radio Service, repair radios.

But then those pesky musicians kept coming around, want to build a band learder him some PA equipment for concerts, jazz guitarist stuck with their pickups on acoustic guitars, and amps for the then popular country music in Southern California, and for those beautiful lap steel guitar for the new rage, Hawaiian music.

This led him to work with Doc Kauffman, an inventor and lap steel player, who had worked for Rickenbacker guitars. Strangely, had Leo’s later guitars several functions similar to early Rickenbacker designs. Strange coincidence.

Hawaiian guitars? They made Hawaiian guitars and amplifiers for Hawaiian guitar.

Kaufmann thought would be best to keep money in the business of repairing amps and Hawaiian guitars. Leo thought it could be more money in the production of other types of guitars. Kauffman was not convinced, and they parted ways.

World Warr II had shown that nothing should electronic robust, and Leo took this to heart in the design of its amplifier. His new amps were stronger and more robust, pushed the issue of up to 18 or even 45 watts. They had heavy steel bases for the tubes and electronics, heavy pine housing with tweed fabric and chrome control plates. They quickly became popular.

solid-body guitars .. Strange New Idea Up to this point, all the gigs were recorded with guitarist playing acoustic guitar pickups. Leo began to develop a solid body guitar with bolt-on neck as the former Rickenbacker design. There were stumbling around with a lot of brands, design changes, and the dealer problems, but the guitars were a big hit exactly the same.

Later, his development of “precision bass, precisely because he frets that had not the large and heavy bass, solved the problems of portability and sound for bass players.

And the common theme was that Leo Fender amp made for these instruments.

Rolling Stone guitarist Keith Richards has partnered with the words: “I think the stroke of genius, really, was not his invention of the electric guitar has been cited, but the invention of the amplifier to go with him.”

Later in life, Leo Fender was in both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in recognition of the power he created with his musical inventions.

As a child, Leo took piano lessons. In high school he played saxophone in the band. But by his own admission, he never learned to play guitar. Although he is most known for the development of the popular solid-body instruments (the Telecaster, Stratocaster, Jaguar and p-bass), the theme of it all was his fascination with electronics.
