Texas: The "Big" Wine Country
Maybe I already told my wife and I are planning a late summer trip to Branson, Missouri. To achieve this, we must travel east through New Mexico before arriving in El Paso. From El Paso, what awaits us is about 800 miles of travel across the great state of Texas. The main decision factor will be whether the race through two days or go more slowly in three days or more. My wife has had two votes, I am a voice, and, consequently, I lost the election. If we were going to take several days, I felt that some pit stops to investigate the Texas Wine Country were in order.
Texas is huge! This is an area of over 262,000 hectares that are more than 800 miles from north to south and 733 miles from east to west. Guadalupe Peak at 8,749 meters is the highest point and the level of the sea of the Gulf Coast had the lowest. You can travel anywhere in Texas, because it has a leader 305.951 miles of road. The State is divided into four wine regions: North Texas, Central East Texas, Southeast Texas and West Texas. Texas has a long history of producing wine starting near El Paso in the 1650s. If you drew a line from Corpus Christi to the west of San Antonio, north of Wichita Falls, and follow the border of Texas and South-East Back in Corpus Christi, you have a polygon containing most of the production wine. There are important wine, but scattered areas of growth in western Texas near the cities of El Paso, Lubbock and Fredericksburg.
Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are by far the biggest wine grown in Texas. Syrah, Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Viognier and Pinot Gris are also the leading grape varieties. A total of 3,200 hectares is currently in production. Nearly 2 million liters of wine were produced in Texas in 2005, making that state the fifth largest producer in the United States. The University of Texas is the first wine producer with nearly one third of all acres currently under cultivation throughout the state. The advent of Prohibition (1920-1933) the U.S. has virtually eliminated the Texas wine industry to the modern revival in the 1970s. The wine industry in the state is still feeling the effects of the ban with one quarter of the counties still “dry laws” in the books.
The Texas Hill Country has become a major destination for wine tour which was matched only by the Napa Valley in California. The region is characterized by hills, picturesque towns, old farms and vineyards tours tasting rooms scattered back and forth. A good place to begin an adventure in this area is Fredericksburg. You can drive around yourself or gather a group and take a bus tour of luxury. Let someone else drive, allowing you to have fun and try all the wines that you meet a lot of sense. Many communities have their own wine festivals and people who attend them are growing in number.
Many of us have danced the Texas two-step. I found another tradition in Texas, Texas Two-sip. Texas Two-SIP is a challenge, blind tasting of a collection of state and wines of the state. The goal is to use your taste buds for the best. There are special rules and forms to complete, but no specific rules on what you can eat food. Sounds like a part of me. The only caution I have is that I did not find the rule when you get to take your blindfold off. Be careful where you step.
When I was home on leave travel military, I had car trouble in Fredericksburg. People took me in, fed me and put me up, while the mechanic repaired my resident heap. When I was about to leave, they gave me the gift of a thank you for my service and cover all my bills. Because of viticulture here, I now have another reason to take a break here. Search on Highway 290, here we are.

Floridia: Home to the Original American Wine
Many of our clients at Ideal wine coolers hail from the great state of Florida. I was curious what Florida’s wine industry was all about. Interestingly, Florida ranked third in the consumption of wine in New York and California that the top two spots. However, the wine growing industry in Florida is an important contribution to the state of the local economy, but the wineries are gaining a growing reputation for their wine. Another fact that escaped me was that Florida is home to the original American wine.
Wine was first made in Florida, 300 one hundred years earlier, a state of California. Early Spanish and French explorers discovered native muscadine grapes grown in the wild. Around 1565, settlers began production of the original American wine grape indigenous largely as sacramental wine for religious purposes. The tropical climate in Florida and the presence of many diseases made wine grapevine growing problem for many years. In the 1930s, hybrid grapes for the Florida climate were developed by the University of Florida researchers. It was not until 1980 that Florida might even a growing wine industry from a demand note.
There are fewer than 30 wineries and vineyards in the state. These few market leaders across the state to find the Florida Panhandle on the Homestead area south of Miami. Mainly because of the growing season differences, the grape harvests begin in May and ends in September, far more than places like Pennsylvania. Most of the vineyards are found in the out-of-the-way places of the state and are centered near the small, beautiful country communities. A visit to this small, friendly cities, a culmination of a wine Videotour travel in the state and certainly improve the understanding of early American history.
Muscadine wines can not be found anywhere else in the world and are considered a southern specialty. The research and development of new hybrids will certainly improve the varieties of grapes grown in Florida. Some of the major grapes Stover, Blanc du Bois, Swanee, Noble, muscadine, and Miss Blanc. I have no doubt that the development of more varieties and hybrids eventually will serve the future choices for Florida to increase wine drinkers. Florida is also a state that allows shipping of wines on its borders with minimal requirements. It may be worth your time to check the possibility if you do not travel.
On 24 and June 25 this year, the Florida International Wine Challenge hold its sixth annual competition at the Palms Hotel in Miami Beach. The 2010-Wine Challenge is touted to be the biggest in history. This event has given awards to wineries and vineyards from around the world. This year, event organizers will be offering an educational package that is sure to let everyone enjoy the event to increase.
Many people wonder why the Florida wine industry not to achieve fame. Many of the wines there are numerous national and international awards. Maybe it’s because many of us still look to Florida, where oranges are grown and where Lake Okeechobee, the Everglades and Disney World are located. I recommend when the next Florida, that one of the small town of vineyards or wine venders and try a bottle of homemade wine. Remember, as I always say you have a wine you enjoy, store until you use it as well, these at exactly the right temperature and enjoy.

DaVinci Winery Review
Twenty years ago, most wine drinkers in the world thought of Italian Chianti as peasants food, fortunately for wine lovers everywhere that opinion was getting away from producers, capable of traditional Italian grapes (such as Sangiovese, the primary grape for a balance have undermined Chianti) with modern wine making, allowing the wine is not only consistent year to year have, but also reduce some of the less attractive elements such as acidity and bitterness.
A winery that has been at the forefront of these changes within the Italian wine DaVinci Winery, located in the small Italian town of Vinci. In essence, a cooperative of small growers who have come together to share facilities and a winery this business model allows the winemaker, the directly employed by all farmers equally among the best grapes selected each year to be included in each of the mixtures. The results are consistent from year to year, more wine, but with the clear differences vintage, the grapes were selected. This format has to be there DaVinci, perhaps the most famous and respected producers in Chianti, Italy.
DaVinci craft currently six different wines and keep up with the historic character of the estate, are three of the six Chianti. With three different levels of quality and the price points, the wines are often 86-94 points from major wine critics such as Wine Spectator or Robert Parker.
Goals
Alberto Antonini is the current winemaker DaVinci and it boasts some of the most impressive credentials to anyone in the industry. With a degree in oenology from Bordeaux and a master’s degree from the University of California Davis, he has a unique perspective in bringing about more internationalization of Italian wine. Italian wine is traditionally the earth bound and more bitter in each region, for the consumers, such traditionally been a big negative. Alberto’s focus was on the positive aspects and unique flavors that accentuate be found not only within Sangiovese, but the Chianti region itself, he also focuses on the maintenance of a more internationally acceptable level of acidity and bitterness, why DaVinci wines so easily accepted in to international markets like the United States.
In the coming weeks and months, I hope you will try something new and to try another Italian wine. DaVinci is not only widespread, but also offers some of the highest quality Chianti imported into the United States. I think it’s also a fun task to the differences in their three different levels offered tastes of wine and see for yourself if you think

Why’re Comfort Foods So… Comforting?
Picture this: you just broke. Eyes red from the crying, you listen to “One is the Loneliest Number” on endless repeat, no matter what the season, every time you step outside it rains. In a daze, you stumble through your kitchen and inflexible you are located in the freezer, on the third drawer down, on the ice. Of course the slightly cool-burning taste Mint Chocolate Chip well, it is always the case, but with every creamy bite, you find yourself thinking for the moment at least, that everything will be okay.
This all too familiar scenario is tied to a great human tradition: comfort food. The fact that we seem to gravitate to certain foods in times of grief is nothing new, of course (in reality, the term “comfort food” has official recognition from Webster’s in 1972 and we had an article written about them once before), but recent research sheds interesting light on the relationship between grief and the fourth chocolate chip cookie.
Why do we want certain foods when we are sad? Common wisdom dictates that anything you comforted a child makes a quick, soothing distress when an adult. If your mom gave to help with pickles teeth, it is likely to associate you with ease pickles when you’re in pain. It is certainly true, but all signs point to the comfort-food phenomenon that something more than psychological.
According to one theory advanced by the University of California, we use a high-fat, high-sugar foods to balance our hormones in times of chronic stress. When the body is subjected to stress, adrenal glands release certain hormones called glucocorticoids. In the immediate danger-situations (like, say, a car accident or extreme physical pain) the amount of glucocorticoids released can eventually crash our stress-response systems. But during periods of chronic stress, the hormones released at a lower level, instead of shutting us down, they drive us to seek food and pleasant gathering abdominal fat. By doing so, we send a “one-OK” signal to the brain, which interrupts the release of more hormones.
Numerous trials with rats support the theory, chronically stressed rats drank increasing amounts of sugar water until they died stress reactions. It is not much of a stretch to think it works in a similar way for you or for me. The researchers concluded that the abdominal fat one way or another all-clear place to regulate metabolism.
In another study conducted by Sue Zmarzty and others at the Northern General Hospital Trust / Centre for Human Nutrition in the United Kingdom, the participants have a high-fat food, or a high-carb breakfast, then dunked their hands in ice water, those who enjoy fattier pancakes were much more tolerant towards pain. The conclusion is fattier foods can reduce the amount of pain a person feels. How exactly this works remains a mystery, but theories factor in everything from the special hormones released by a high-fat intake to the palatability of sugar-rich foods.
The point is, our bodies clearly physically respond to comfort food, which means your craving for Mac n ‘Cheese into a funeral is not just in your head. People do a lot of unhealthy trying to cope with pain and loss of self-harm to drugs, in the big scheme of things, eat a few extra fat is not so bad, especially when your body tells him. when the need arises, unfortunately, not sitting in the rain or make good friends with a bottle. Instead of freezing your head, grab that ice cream, and enjoy for a while!

Italian Varietals Abound in Temecula Wineries – Part IV
Today’s article is a wonderful fruity Primitivo grape (pronounced Pree-mih-TEE-Voe), again from Italy. Primitivo is a purple wine with strong fruity flavors. Primitivo was of course linked to the more well-known grape Zinfandel grape.
In this article we will talk about another one of these newly emerging Italian grape varieties in Temecula Valley Wine Country. The first information of this sort is that it started in Greece or Albania. It’s not exactly been moved as and when this plant is known in Italy, but the account of that variety in Italy chronicles many centuries back. In the 17 Century is well known that the Benedictine monks of the Primitivo grape variety known for its earliness (early ripening of the grapes) in this area.
Primitivo has so many things like the father of the Zinfandel grape, which are so celebrated in California have been described. In the early years, DNA studies show at the University of California at Davis, that the Zinfandel grape is the same as the Primitivo grape in the southeastern region of Apulia Italys is harvested. Further studies by the University of California at Davis showed that Zinfandel is a clone of the Croatian variety Crlienak. Oddly Primitivo also originally mutated from Crlienak. This shows how to make the two grapes, Zinfandel and Primitivo, much like wine tasting and elegant port-style dessert wines.
Primitivo wines from working together intensively to be shaded, rich and concentrated with spicy aromas of cherry, clove, cultivated wild blackberries, raspberries and spice. Occasionally Primitivo wines have a characteristic Jammy. Primitivo is not only a nice table wine, but also a fantastic, raisin-ey and pruney Port-style dessert wine.
Primitivo goes well with a common dish in Italy of grilled lamb. The wine also goes well with grilled steaks outdoors or chops or meat, was cooked or stuffed with fruit.
In 2002, the TTB (Alcohol and tobacco tax and Trade Bureau) began testing presented Zinfandel and Primitivo are similar for the use of wine labels. This provides that if the verdict is decided that you may find Italian Primitivo wine labeled as Zinfandel.
In Temecula Valley Primitivo is available in limited quantities as a red table wine and Port-style dessert wine at the Cougar Vineyard & Winery in 39 870 De Portola Road. Cougar chose the wine Primitivo keep hold to their Italian-centric labeled varietal tasting menu. The winery is located on the De Portola Wine Trail of Temecula Wine Country. It also manages a morning of 9-year-old vines and harvested in Fallbrook, has three-year-old vines at the winery, located in Temecula Wine Country has grown. European Village is a 3-year-old vine vineyards Primitivo. European village located between Callaway Vineyard and Winery Baily on Rancho California Road in Temecula Wine Country.
Cougar Vineyard & Winery is located in exclusive Italian varietals grown with two thousand five hundred and eighty vines are harvested Primitivo. Cougar is in the light of all these other varieties planted harvested by Cougar in future articles regarding the Italian grape varieties in Temecula Wine Country of Southern California.

"A loaf of bread, a jug of wine, and…" A Midwest Wine Competition!
Wine Fair Indiana State competition began in 1973 as an “Indiana only” event, and in its infancy, was intended, obviously, to promote Indiana growers and wine makers later came across the Midwest. In 1992, Dr. Richard Vine, Purdue University professor Enology, began to allow entry of wines from around the world to participate. In 2006 Christian Butzke assumed leadership as the new executive director of the Indy International Wine Competition (www.in.gov / CBI) and is now known.
Currently, the Indy International Wine Competition is the greatest scientist organized the independent wine competition in the United States. According to the Competition Manager, Jill Blume, “This year more than 3,000 wines from a total of ten different countries were entered and judged by 16 panels consisting of 72 judges of both the United States and Canada.” And I had the honor of being one of the judges of this year!
This year, the Indy International Wine Competition was held 16-18 June 2009. The event came two days was really an incredible experience and one of the best organized and run the competitions I have participated to date. All wines entered are tasted and judged blindly. As judges wine, we have evaluated and recorded our impressions of the wine entries from other countries gave us, and very unique wine grape varieties of lesser known, other fruits and hybrid grapes grown in the United States and specifically the Midwest.
Admittedly, I had limited experience with a number of unique grape hybrids, which were used to perform many of the wines presented in this elegant wine competition. Many of these hybrids were created specifically grape to grow in diversity and Midwest often harsh climates. As I’m sure you can imagine, there is a broad spectrum of extremes in terms of flavor of these hybrids, from sugar sweet and bitter about everything else.
Some of Indy winners of this year’s International Wine Competition including Huber Orchard & Winery (Starlight, IN) who won the Governors Cup-Indiana Winery of the Year. Rancho Zabaco (Healdsburg, CA), won the Wine of the Year with its 2007 Zinfandel Reserve and Chateau Frank (Hammondsport, New York) won sparkling wine in 2002 with his Brut. My favorite among the winners of the Gold Medal was Butler Winery in Bloomington, where he won Ros? Wine of the Year 2008 with Ros Chambourcin?.
Interestingly, there were many entries fruit wines wine competition this year. Wyldewood Cellars (www.Wyldewoodcellars.com) Kansas City, KS, was awarded many medals their wines. This winery makes intriguing elderberry, blackberry, raspberry and even Traminette (a GEW? Hybrid rztraminer) wines. His 2007 Prairie Schooner (wine elderberry dessert) won a gold medal. I liked Wyldewood selection of wines from Bodegas Blackberry.
Focusing only in Indiana for a moment, I was pleasantly surprised by the truly awful wines produced in that state. One of my favorite wine I discovered after the competition is Bodegas Wine Butler (www.ButlerWinery.com) from Bloomington, IN. His wines always embody excellent quality, making great wines and value. It turns out that many of the wines entered the competition this year wines won gold and silver. The Butler Winery 2008 Chambourcin Ros? Vidal Icewine and 2007 are simply amazing and both of these wines are gold medals. The non-vintage white Indiana, Vignoles and Chardonel fact, and the net non-vintage, from Chambourcin both took silver medals and was outstanding.
For the most part, virtually all of the wines on trial in the 2009 Indy International Wine Competition were handmade professional and good quality. It was a wonderful surprise to me that such fine wine, these dark grape varieties and hybrids exist outside the nation’s best known and marketed wine states such as California, Washington, Oregon and New York, where the more common varieties the grapes are grown and used to make wine. These and other Midwest state winemakers competition exhibited at Indy International Wine this year are now competing for the attention of American wine drinker and the dollar. Midwest Let me say these wines are responsible wine worth buying and trying!
